Whilst studying barbering here at HSDC, you will enhance your creative talents and create the latest hairstyles for a range of clients. You will learn how to cut men’s hair and facial hair and will cover men’s grooming such as brow services, facials and manicures. You will cover theory units of health and safety, principles of hairdressing and anatomy and physiology. You will also develop your client consultation, communication and customer service skills.
You need four GCSEs in Science, English, preferably Maths and one other subject at a grade 3 or above. Or a Level 1 or 2 qualification in Hairdressing.
Units covered on this course include Cut men’s hair using basic techniques Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques Dry and finish men’s hair Create basic outlines and detailing in hair Advise and consult with clients Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work Colour and lighten men’s hairIn addition to the above, you will study a College Certificate in Male grooming of eyebrows, facial techniques and manicure techniques
You will be taught in our Synergy Salon by lecturers who have extensive salon experience. You will work on blocks to begin with and once you have gained your skills, you will begin to work on clients once you are confident. Theory will be delivered in a classroom environment. Once the theory units have been delivered, you will undertake unit exams (short answer tests) that will test your knowledge. You will need a uniform, kit and textbook to help you on this course. We will support you to gain valuable industry work experience and we have many masterclasses from industry experts for you to enjoy. The Synergy Salon is a fantastic facility, providing you with a realistic salon environment to develop your skills and perfect your craft.
You will be assessed internally. There are theory exams which are externally set and externally marked. There are practical assessments which are internally set, internally marked and externally verified.
This course requires you to purchase a uniform and kit and we include trips to enhance your learning and experience of industry. All of these costs will be explained at interview and students in receipt of financial assistance will be supported with these costs.
A few of the possible routes after completing your Level 2 Barbering could be, Level 2 Women's Hairdressing, apprenticeship in barbering or employment in a barbers.
