Overview

The course is aimed at anybody who wants to gain a GCSE qualification in English Language. When employers or colleges require a pass in GCSE English they usually mean a grade 4 or above.

Consequently, all students will be entered for the examinations at the end of the course. Students will work with texts across a range of forms, such as letters, articles, speeches and leaflets. Texts range across fiction and non-fiction from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.

To qualify for this course, you will normally have achieved a grade 3 in English GCSE.

Paper One

  • Fiction Paper (50% of final mark) – final exam in the summer term.

Paper Two

  • Non-fiction Paper (50% of final mark) – final exam in the summer term.

Speaking and Listening Assessment – inclass assessment taken during the course.

The qualification has two exams which will be in June each year.

In addition, there is a “spoken language” component which is assessed separately and given the markers: Pass, Merit, Distinction. Although this part of the qualification does not count towards your GCSE it does appear on the final certificate and the preparation for it will be a useful life skill.

There will be timed assessments and mock examinations throughout the year, mostly carried out in class time. Homework will consist largely of reading a range of texts, both literary and non-literary.

Printing costs £5 per year.

I overcame a couple of barriers by working really hard to get the top grades. My experience was really good, with the course and the lecturers, the residentials and activities, together it was all really good. I had really great teaching support, I could always go to the lecturers and speak to them if I needed to.

David Stenning, Public Services student

My courses were all especially interesting, I thoroughly enjoyed all of them. All of my lecturers were extremely knowledgeable and I have learnt a lot from them.

Lottie Warren, A Level student

My experience at the college was enjoyable and productive, with thoroughly helpful people surrounding you, an excellent experience. I wasn’t expecting it to be as good as it was, with the work shop time and experience I had, it was a great two years preparing me for the next stage.
