Overview

In the UK the legal sector is worth approximately £60 billion, with over 12,000 organisations and approximately 15,000 selfemployed barristers. The UK’s legal sector supports trade and commerce around the world and Legal Services are essential to the UK’s future as a global, outward-looking, free-trading nation. Roles vary within the profession from small high street legal firms to larger/national corporate firms, local authorities, social welfare, and criminal justice.

Therefore if you are interested in a career in Law, then this would be a great course for you. You will study the English Legal System, Tort Law, Criminal Law and aspects of Business and Company Law.

You will also have the opportunity to put much of this learning into practice during your industry placement. You will get to consider real life cases and the impact of legislation which governs the laws of our country. You will learn how to conduct legal research and take part in regular assessments and activities which require you to advise on the law in a variety of situations.

This is suitable for anyone who is looking to go into the legal profession, has a genuine passion or interest in Law or for those who want to know what studying Law is all about.

You will need 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English and Mathematics.

You will develop an understanding of a broad range of issues relevant to the sector and in year 1 will cover topics including:

– The business environment
– Careers within the legal profession
– Professionalism and ethics
– Security and risk
– Equality, diversity and inclusion requirements
– Third party professional services
– The fundamentals of law
– The fundamentals of financial accounting
– An awareness of digital and emerging technology, digital transformation and digital tools
– Data driven innovation, analytics and design thinking
– Research skills

In year 2 you will study the Occupational Specialism of Crime and the Criminal Justice System.

You will be assessed through examinations, an employer set project and in year 2 a synoptic assessment.

After you have completed this course you can potentially go straight into working in the legal sector as a Paralegal, you can progress to an Apprenticeship or you can go to study at university.
