Overview

The T Level in Science is a full-time two-year course that offers an industry-focused route into a variety of science-based careers. It aims to provide you with the knowledge and skills required to move into the science industry, either via employment, further study in higher education, or a higher-level apprenticeship in related fields like biomedical science, forensics, or healthcare science. This qualification prepares you for the workplace through technical skills training and a substantial industry placement.

Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English Language, Mathematics, and preferably Combined/Separate Science.Alternatively, you can complete the Pre T-level Health & Science course or the Level 2 GCSE Package course, which is a foundation year offering you the opportunity to retake English, Maths, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. To progress, you will achieve a grade 4 in English and Maths, plus one or more Separate Sciences.

The classroom-based portion of the qualification is divided into two parts: the Core Component and the Occupational Specialism. In Year 1, you will cover: Working within the Science Sector; Health, Safety, and Environmental Regulations; Managing Information and Scientific Data; Principles of Good Scientific and Clinical Practice; Core Science Principles (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics). In Year 2, you will study one of the following specialisms: Laboratory Sciences (advanced analytical techniques, instrumentation, and quality control procedures in a laboratory setting), Food Sciences (food safety systems, processing technology, quality management, and new product innovation), or Metrology Sciences (precision measurement, calibration, standards maintenance, and control of instrumentation). This will give you the opportunity to develop the high-level skills needed to be competent in the STEM sector, including related fields like biomedical science, forensics, or healthcare science. The distinctive and essential component of the T Level includes the mandatory 315-hour industry placement. This is a structured, professional placement designed to bridge academic learning and professional practice.

In Year 1, you will sit two written papers assessing the knowledge and understanding of the core content. You will also carry out an Employer Set Project (ESP), a practical project designed by employers to test applied skills, problem-solving, and professional behaviours in a realistic context. In Year 2, you will be assessed via a series of practical tasks conducted under observation, looking at the technical skills and application of knowledge specific to your chosen specialism. You will receive a grade of Pass, Merit, or Distinction/Distinction*.You will also be required to complete the 315 hours on industry placement.

T Levels are recognised across the UK and provide an excellent foundation for your future. The T Level has UCAS tariff points and is fully supported by top universities. You could apply for degrees in Microbiology, Biomedical Science, Chemical Engineering, or Forensic Science. You could also use your T Level to fast-track into higher apprenticeships, earning a salary and a degree at the same time.Alternatively, jump straight into the workforce in well-paid technician roles. You could start as a Laboratory Technician, Analytical Support Scientist, Food Technologist, or Quality Control Specialist.

Everyone at the College was really helpful, and there’s lots of facilities, meaning it’s very easy to get your work done on time, and get good grades. The teaching and support was excellent, they were always on top of it, and made sure you got work done on time and you were challenged. Everyone is friendly and its really diverse, meaning you can get involved in lots of different things.

My courses were all especially interesting, I thoroughly enjoyed all of them. All of my lecturers were extremely knowledgeable and I have learnt a lot from them.

Lottie Warren, A Level student

I’m very, very happy, I didn’t expect to do so well. The College has been helpful and supportive. I loved my courses, and the teachers were really good – every single one of them. The facilities are great, but it’s the staff that really make this place.
