If a career in fashion and textiles appeals to you and youre creative, interested in making, styling, drawing and photography, this course is for you. Its a broad-ranging course covering aspects of fashion and textiles design processes including surface pattern, interior design, textile art and fashion.
Working within a commercial context, you will select customers to design for, gather and record inspiration to help you develop your ideas, while learning practical skills such as printmaking, embellishment and construction techniques, and how to communicate your creative vision through photography, graphics and illustration.
Entry Requirements Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English Language and one art-based subject; alternatively you will be accepted if you have gained successful completion of a BTEC/ UAL Level 2 Diploma at Merit or Distinction grade. You are also advised to bring in sketchbooks from year 10 and 11. Finally, any of your own textiles or fashion work that you may have completed in your own time (if applicable).
The course is very practical and you will take part in a range of workshops to give you the skills to bring your designs to life. You will learn illustration and surface design, how to develop a project and build a portfolio, alongside a variety of different stitching and construction techniques. You will be encouraged to work independently to develop your skills and identify your own creative passions and interests.
You will be set briefs to work on, for which you will need to complete initial observational studies in the form of drawings and photographs to inspire and inform your work, and you will research the work of a variety of artists, designers and makers to build your knowledge of this exciting and engaging creative specialism. You will be encouraged to explore innovative ways to combine materials and processes to create a variety of outcomes. Live projects such as fashion shows and exhibitions will showcase your designs, giving you insight into the fashion and textiles industry. You will also explore the concept of trend prediction and identify the varying job roles within the fashion and textiles industry such as marketing, buying and design, which will help you to identify progression routes.
There will be opportunities to visit galleries and exhibitions to provide further insight into this specialism and expand your knowledge and experience.
You will be taught practically, techniques and specialist skills will be demonstrated and discussed with you and you will then regenerate what you have seen in your own creative style.
You will keep a sketchbook with all samples, designs and your thoughts and artist/ designer research to demonstrate your development and how you reached and realised your final outcomes. At times you will work in a self-directed format, planning your own time, researching, and exploring your own design concepts.
Each project will cover specific units. Over the two years of the course you will have covered many units. Each unit is assessed at Pass, Merit or Distinction grade attributing to a final overall grade at the end of the course. Those wanting to continue onto Higher Education will need to receive a Merit grade or above to obtain the required amount of UCAS points.
Most of our students continue to Higher Education including places at prestigious universities such as London College of Fashion, East London and Epsom. Others have embarked upon internships in London, or progressed into a career in retail.
