This course is designed to prepare you to study either Health & Nursing or Biomedical & Healthcare Science.
The science element of this course is focused on giving you a solid educational foundation to science, which includes both theoretical and practical skills in earth science, biology, chemistry and physics. As a learner, youll acquire the investigative skills needed to work in a laboratory setting and work on a project.
With health and social care, you’ll look at very important skills such as communication, teamwork and understanding of the care values that will help you to become a professional carer. Youll also cover units in health and safety, health and social care services and Individual Needs. Much of your work will involve writing short reports or producing leaflets and posters that might be used in a care setting. You’ll also undertake 4 weeks of work experience where youll be able to try out some of the skills you have learnt.
You should normally have achieved a grade 3 profile at GCSE. To study this course, you should also have an interest in working with people.
You must have a clear DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.
Health & Science course is divided into units (subjects) and there are two types of unit, which make up any one course. The course consists of four core units and four optional units. The core units are studied by all students nationally. The optional units are chosen by the College from a list provided by the examination board OCR.

In addition, you will study English and Mathematics at a level appropriate for you unless you already have a GCSE grade (9-4).
A team of lecturers teach the course, which lasts one year and is coordinated by a programme manager, you will also have a tutor. The team meets regularly to plan and coordinate assignments and activities and to discuss students progress.
You will have a mixture of formal and less formal learning experiences. Some sessions will be in the form of lectures but you will also participate in a mixture of activities – whether working individually or in groups. You will participate in role-plays, discussions and presentations.
To achieve on this course, you need to complete written assignments, a science exam and a project.
This course is the ideal route onto the Health & Nursing or Biomedical & Healthcare Science T Levels.
