Overview

This is a nationally recognised qualification and is based on National Occupational Standards, which are standards written by employers and experts in your industry. When you achieve your qualification, it will prove that you can work to the standards expected by employers in your industry.

Your qualification will show you are competent to do a job and have the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to do it well. This course will prepare you for employment in supervision and leadership roles. It covers the makeup of the hospitality industry, communication, leading a team, supervision of customer service, stock control and the effective use of resources.

You should have achieved at least four GCSEs Grade 4 and above including English or Mathematics or equivalent. Ideally you should have achieved a full level 2 catering qualification to progress onto this course. Some experience in the hospitality industry would be beneficial, but not essential.

Whilst working, leading and supervising in our award-winning restaurant, you will achieve your qualification by completing five core units:

– Lead a team to improve customer service
– Develop productive working relationships with colleagues
– Provide leadership for your team
– Contribute to the control of resources
– Maintain the health, hygiene, safety and security of the working environment

You also choose a number of optional units from a wide range that includes:
– Supervise reception services
– Provide learning opportunities for colleagues
– Contribute to the development of a wine list
– Contribute to promoting hospitality services and products

Practical assessments will take place here at HSDC South Downs within a realistic working environment in our award-winning restaurant, cafe and shop. College-based observations, witness testimonies, work products, questioning, and discussion are submitted to your portfolio.

This course requires you to purchase a uniform and kit and we include trips to enhance your learning and experience of industry. All of these costs will be explained at interview and students in receipt of financial assistance will be supported with these costs.

After completing this course you can progress into an apprenticeship or full time employment.

My experience at the college has been really good, it’s been really rewarding, all the lecturers were so lovely and supportive there’s no way I could have done it without them - the teaching has been outstanding.

Lucie Brooks, A Level student

There are lots of people at the college, each studying a diverse range of courses, people from all different areas come to study here, it creates a sense of community, there is a huge social aspect to college life across all courses.

Lee Backhouse, BTEC student

I’m very, very happy, I didn’t expect to do so well. The College has been helpful and supportive. I loved my courses, and the teachers were really good – every single one of them. The facilities are great, but it’s the staff that really make this place.

Matthew Randell, A Level student
