Overview

This one-year course is designed for students who are looking to develop their music performance skills for a career in the music industry. Alongside the course, you will also study for your Mathematics and English Functional Skills and/or GCSE qualifications.

Five GCSEs at grade 3. Entry is by audition to demonstrate that you are advanced enough with your instrument/voice to start rehearsing with a band.

On this course, you will have the opportunity to study a variety of music performance related areas. These include rehearsing and recording music, producing music and the music industry. The UAL course units are designed to develop your skills in preparation for the final assessed unit.

You will be taught by music industry professionals who are both qualified lecturers and specialists in their discipline. The course programme uses practical teaching methods to develop essential skills. Classroom and homework activities will help you discover fundamental aspects of the music industry and other music related areas. Students will be required to work independently and within groups.

You will be continually assessed on a Pass or Fail basis on the first 7 units. The final Unit will be graded on a Pass, Merit, Distinction level. Much of the work is practical in nature but written assignments and presentations are required to support this. There is a big emphasis on research which is excellent preparation for Level 3. There is no final examination.

Students who gain at least an overall Merit grade can progress to our Level 3 qualifications. The pathway can then lead to a Level 4 (here at HSDC) or Higher Education if desired. Some students may gain employment in the music industry as a direct result of achieving an overall Merit or Distinction.

Students on this course have had the opportunity to perform at Victorious Festival and the Wedgewood Rooms.

My experience at the College was great, it’s very different to school, and I think it’s a good step to going to university. The support was amazing, I loved all of my teachers, they helped me through everything. The College is friendly and you will succeed.

Heidi Adamson Brattland, A Level student

I would say it’s a college that really balances academia with fun, there is lots of extra-curricular stuff that you can get involved in. It has a really good work/life balance.

Laura Hagedorn, A Level student

My experience at the college was enjoyable and productive, with thoroughly helpful people surrounding you, an excellent experience. I wasn’t expecting it to be as good as it was, with the work shop time and experience I had, it was a great two years preparing me for the next stage.

Edward Smith, BTEC student
