This course is designed to give you new insights into many different aspects of photography and graphics. Through a series of workshops and projects, you’ll learn and build upon new and existing skills in a variety of areas while building a creative portfolio. You will work in well equipped studios and have access to a broad range of media and materials associated with both disciplines such as digital and traditional cameras, studio lighting, darkroom facilities, Adobe software including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign and graphic studios. You’ll also acquire a greater insight into industry practices through visits to galleries and exhibitions. This fast-paced course is perfect for students wishing to progress to the level 3 Extended Diploma in Photography and Graphics at HSDC.
Five GCSEs at grade 3 or above including English Language and a creative subject.
You will produce practical work based on a given brief. Each brief will allow you to explore historical and contemporary photography / graphics practices while looking at others’ work. On this course, you will study: How to research and structure creative projects, technical skills, associated health and safety, studio lighting, Adobe software, film processing and darkroom printing, image manipulation, presentation techniques, drawing skills and digital skills.
Our photography and graphics facilities have been designed to provide specialist creative areas of provision for vocational students and are supported by dedicated technicians. You will have access to photography studios and associated lighting, a large well equipped traditional darkroom, digital studios as well as general art and design equipment including print making facilities.
All units are assessed individually, following set deadlines. On completion of this one-year course, you will be awarded an overall grade for the qualification. During each assignment, there is a period of practical workshops that introduce you to a wide range of art techniques and processes, followed by one-to-one help while producing your own work.
Students who achieve a Merit grade or above can progress to a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Photography & Graphics or any other relevant Level 3 qualification.
