Overview

This course is a mix of practical and theory based learning with a focus on giving you a well-rounded and detailed knowledge of the sports sector. You’ll cover topics such as applied coaching skills, sports development, sports psychology, nutrition for physical performance, anatomy and physiology in sport, school sport delivery, research project in sport, careers in the sport and active leisure industry. You’ll consider the roles, responsibilities and skills of sports coaches, and plan, deliver and participate in sports sessions while also learning about what goes on inside the human body, as well as understanding the impact that nutrition and psychology can have on an athlete’s performance. In addition, you’ll have
opportunities to complete a work experience placement of your choosing as well as volunteering within the local community.

In September 2021 students on this course took the lead in delivering after school sports activities at Bidbury Junior School.
The support of our students contributed to Bidbury Junior School being awarded the Gold School Games Mark. This is a government-led awards scheme which rewards schools for their commitment to the development of competition and wider physical activity opportunities across the school.

You may also be able to gain additional experience in coaching and leading groups with endorsement from The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA).

Five GCSEs including English Language, Mathematics and Science at grade 4 or above.

Across this two-year course, you will study 13 units (six units in Year 1 and seven units in Year 2). Each unit aims to develop specialist sports-related knowledge.

The sports development related units will examine issues in sport, barriers to participation for specific groups of people and the issues in sports development. Within the sports coaching and school sport delivery units, you will consider the roles, responsibilities and skills of sports coaches, and plan and deliver sports sessions. In anatomy and physiology, you will also examine the different systems of the body and establish their relationship with sports performance and consider how sports psychology and nutrition play an important role in maximising performance.

You will be timetabled over four days, with time to study independently and to take part in enrichment-based activities that run across College. You will have your Wednesday afternoons free to be involved with one or more of the College teams. The course will involve you working on different tasks and activities which will go towards your final assessments. Lecturers will always be available to support your learning and understanding of the assignments set.

You should be very aware that although there are many opportunities to take part in practical sessions, this is a theory-based course and is equivalent to 3 A Levels. This should be considered before you make your final decision about whether this is the course for you. The course currently has no exams, which may be a positive aspect for you to consider, however, the coursework demands can be high so you’ll need to have very good organisational skills and make sure you are fully committed.

You will work through a continuous programme of assignments, class activities, practical tasks, discussions, presentations, written reports, voluntary work, organising events and coaching. Each assessment will be graded against the unit criteria and from there you will get an overall grade ranging from Pass, Merit and Distinction.

In the future you could pursue a career in PE teaching, sports coaching, sports development, sports management and the leisure industry, amongst others. You may progress onto Level 4 courses at HSDC or Apprenticeships. A large number of our students will move onto university to study degree programmes in PE teaching, sports coaching and development, sport and exercise science, health and fitness, sports psychology and sports studies.

I would say it’s a college that really balances academia with fun, there is lots of extra-curricular stuff that you can get involved in. It has a really good work/life balance.

Laura Hagedorn, A Level student

The teaching and support was really great, the quality was really great, all the teachers really care about your education as well as your wellbeing, they take everything into consideration and they’re great.

Katie Whittingham, A Level student

I’m very, very happy, I didn’t expect to do so well. The College has been helpful and supportive. I loved my courses, and the teachers were really good – every single one of them. The facilities are great, but it’s the staff that really make this place.
