Students from Havant & South Downs College have been taking part in the HE+ scheme, a collaborative project set up by the University of Cambridge in several regions of the UK.

The scheme is designed to help colleges share the best practice in supporting and challenging their most academic Year 12 students with extension activities and materials, as well as creating an atmosphere where students can support each other.

It is hosted primarily at Peter Symonds College in this area and students from various schools and colleges meet on a regular basis.

Students have the opportunity to:

  • Access subject-based extension material, focused on developing the key skills and academic conference required for university-level study
  • Talk to admission staff about the applications process and receive appropriate support and guidance on making a strong application to the University of Cambridge and other competitive universities
  • Attend one or more subject ‘master-classes’ led by an academic from the University of Cambridge.

Anila Jacob, who is a student on the scheme this year, studies Economics, Maths and Geography A Level,s and wishes to study Economics at degree level.

She said: “I thought it would be a good opportunity to learn more about the subject and I wanted to know more about the University of Cambridge.

“I have gained wider knowledge about the subjects, like key theories which I may have not received from the A Level course alone.”

The students have been supported at the College by Sue Holly from the Careers & Employability Team and Helen South who has recently been appointed as HE+ Coordinator.

Sue said: “Students who attended the scheme last year gained fantastic university offers and because of this added emphasis were able to produce some outstanding personal statements and extended projects which can only help their undergraduate study.”
