Staff in the Spotlight: Carly Clinnick

We want to shout about these integral members of our HSDC community, so every month we will be finding out about the people behind our teaching excellence with our ‘Staff in the Spotlight’ feature.

This month we are recognising Carly Clinnick who is the Level 3 Travel & Tourism Course Manager.

Position at HSDC?

Level 3 Travel & Tourism Course Manager, Subject Lecturer and Tutor.

How long have you worked at the College?

Seven years.

Why did you choose the subject that you teach?

It is fun, it builds memories, it is ever-changing and never sleeps!

What was your journey/training before coming to HSDC?

I first learnt it at school taught by a very inspirational teacher, and it became my passion!

I then studied it at HSDC and extended my knowledge at University to obtain a Tourism Management degree.

I then worked for four years in industry as a Travel Agent climbing to Assistant Manager – training new staff on customer service and sales.

I felt like I had lived and breathed the subject and wanted to impart my knowledge on budding stars for the future.

Do you practice the subject you teach outside of work?

I am well travelled, and research lots into current trends in the industry.

What is the highlight of your role at HSDC?

Inspiring young people to get out into the industry and showcase their talents, whether that be supporting an application to university or being a reference for an amazing job role.

What kind of careers have your students gone on to do?

Museum Curator, Air Cabin Crew, Events Co-ordinator, Aiport Ground Handling.

What is something about your job that people don’t know about?

I also course manage two Carnival Cruise Apprenticeship programmes. One for travel consultants who work at Carnival, and one for students who wish to join Carnival as receptionists on-board ships.

What kind of opportunities are students offered on your course?

Trips that help with learning, teachers with great links to industry, work experience, Carnival Apprenticeships and guest speakers.

What three words would your students use to describe you?

Trustworthy, kind and knowledgeable.
