Sports student from Havant & South Downs College had the chance to experience the ‘behind the scenes’ action when they toured the Sky Sports News studios.

The second year Level 3 Sports Development, Coaching & Fitness students visited the studio on 13 December and worked with the Sky Academy team to create a sports news feature.

The students worked in groups to script, video and edit the entire video themselves.

Speaking about the trip, student Luke Kinkart said: “We went on the visit to create our own video about healthy lifestyle. We researched and edited it and learnt how to use all the software.

“We had a tour around the Sky Sports News studio which was incredible. We even saw some live filming that was being done. It was weird because you’re always watching it on TV and then we were actually there.”

Luke continued to say that creating the video feature was his highlight of the day.

He added: “I had never done anything like that before. I learnt how to use a camera which was cool and it was fun talking to the camera. We learnt what it actually takes to put together a TV show.

“Each group had a different topic then it was all put together at the end.”

As well as giving the students a chance to see what really goes on behind the camera, the day trip allowed students to see another potential career path.

Student Jamie Bell said: “The day definitely opened my eyes to all the careers that are our there, it has made me consider a career path in sports journalism.

“This course is really good at showing you all the options that are available to you, so you have a clear view of what you want to do once you leave College. It is a completely different experience to PE in school.”
