Students in Lazarote

Sports students from Havant & South Downs College enjoyed a week in the sun whilst experiencing new activities on a trip to Lanzarote.

The 28 Vocational Sports and A Level PE students travelled to Club la Santa on 10 January to take part in a week packed full of sports ranging from paddle board fitness to hoola hooping.

Sports student Brad Winter said: “There were so many sports to try. Outside of College the only sports I have played have been football or basketball, so I got to play golf for the first time, as well as paddle boarding and volleyball.

“It was also really nice because we’ve never mingled with A Level students before so we made some friends out of it too, we see them all the time around College.

“Everyone got to do a sport that was their specialty as well as trying something new.”

PE Course Manager Gemma Joyce said: “The residential gave our students the chance to experience a range of different activities, some mainstream but some more unusual activities.

“It’s also good to showcase different career opportunities, we want to inspire our students so they don’t think PE is just about being a PE teacher but there is so much more available to them.

“Some athletes go to Club la Santa to train, there was a rugby team when we were there, so it is inspiring to the students. It was an incredible week, we’re already planning for next year.

“The trip was really beneficial because it gave the students the opportunity to try activities they have never experienced before and it’s opened their eyes to more career options available to them in the future.”
