Staff in the Spotlight: Hannah Slight

This month we are recognising Hannah Slight who is the Course Manager for Forensic and Criminal Investigation.

How long have you worked at the College?

2.5 years

Why did you choose the subject that you teach?

I chose to teach forensics and criminal investigation after completing my undergraduate degree, however this was not my original career plan. When I started at university I my goal was to join the police. However, one of my lecturers mentioned the idea of teaching to me and after carrying out some research I decided that this would be the perfect way to utilise my knowledge, teaching others to comprehend a difficult topic.

What was your journey/training before coming to HSDC?

My journey began when I was a student at HSDC in 2009. After completing my BTEC National Diploma in Applied Science I started at the University of Central Lancashire studying a BSc (Hons) Policing and Criminal Investigation. After completing my three years at university I undertook my PGCE at Portsmouth University after which I gained my role as Lecturer in Applied Science.

Do you practice the subject you teach outside of work?

I am currently undertaking a MSc in Criminology and Victimology, developing my skill set to enhance the quality of teaching that students receive.

What is the highlight of your role at HSDC?

Teaching a wide rage of students and seeing them succeed in their goals.

What kind of careers have your students gone on to do?

Since joining HSDC students have gone on to university to study a wide range of courses including: chemistry, psychology, criminology, criminal justice and forensic science.

What is something about your job that people don’t know about?

The role is not just teaching students, there are elements of support that are required that go beyond this to ensure that all students can achieve their ambitions.

What kind of opportunities are students offered on your course?

Students are offered a range of opportunities on the course, including undertaking activities ranging for crime scene examination to practical chemistry.

What three words would your students use to describe you?

Caring, fun and knowledgeable.
