For several weeks Eggar’s School, one of our partner schools, have been manufacturing NHS-approved COVID 19 face shields for health care facilities and fabric face masks for local care workers.

Eggar’s Design & Technology Curriculum Leader Neil Waite explains more: “Most of the face shields have gone out to NHS workers in Hampshire but we have also supplied as far as Cheshire. They have gone out to GP practices, surgeries, dispensaries, Macmillan Cancer Support nurses, community nurses and hospitals, including ICU nurses. We can make 80 units per day here at Eggar’s but realised that we needed to increase production so approached HSDC, knowing they have similar facilities, to see if they would like to run a similar production line.”

The Engineering department at HSDC Alton were pleased to combine resources and, with Engineering teacher Barbara Cox leading the team, produced 80 visors in their first day of production with a goal of producing 100 each day going forward. Demand for visors continues and HSDC Alton are now also supplying Southampton General. Jon Myers, Head of Campus at Alton, said: “I am delighted that we have been able to work with Eggar’s on such a worthwhile project. Amid all the challenges we are all facing it really has been great to see such good work being done in supporting our colleagues in the NHS. We are so pleased we can be a part of this and my thanks go to the staff at Eggar’s and HSDC Alton for leading on this.”
