In the current lockdown, HSDC lecturers are striving to keep their students engaged in many different ways. Havant Campus A Level AQA Philosophy Lecturer Raymond Whelan is trying the innovative approach of giving his students competitive quizzes to help bolster their learning.

Raymond creates quizzes on apps Nearpod and Kahoot, which test his students’ knowledge of the information found in their assignments, as well as reinforces their prior experience. He discusses the answers with them via Google Classroom, asking them to work through how each philosophical method would approach given dilemmas. Students actively engage with the process, competing with each other in a friendly way. They strive to reach the top of the Kahoot mountain, first through having the highest number of correct answers but also help each other when one is confused by something.

He explains why he uses this method:

“It allows students to interact with interesting topics, to interact with each other in a learning environment and to use technology to keep them interested and entertained.”
