HSDC Alton student Leo Long has a bright musical future ahead of him as he has been offered a place to study Music Composition & Technology at the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham Campus, starting this coming September.

Leo explains more,

“Currently I am on my fourth and final year at HSDC Alton, studying a Foundation Course including GCSE Mathematics, Functional Skills in English and ICT, Vocational Studies and also Options.

“I have been offered a place to study BA/BSc (Hons) Music Composition & Technology at the University of Creative Arts, Farnham Campus from September 2021 which is a dream come true for me as I am a passionate folk musician who enjoys composing and playing pieces on my bodhran and banjo. I have performed with London Youth Folk Ensemble, National Open Youth Orchestra, National Orchestra For All and Up Orchestra across the UK at The Royal Conservatoires, prestigious concert halls, arenas and outdoor festivals too.

“In 2020 I was commissioned by Barbican Guildhall Creative Learning as a ‘Barbican Young Creative’ to contribute to a digital project called ‘Subject to Change – New Horizons’ which reflects on the uncertain times brought about by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. I have also worked part-time with Youth Music as a Co-Researcher on their ‘Reshape Music’ report as well as auditioning for a BBC3 Drama.

“Despite having been diagnosed with a speech and language disorder as well as autistic spectrum disorder, by highlighting and demonstrating my unique creative capabilities I am determined to further my studies. My objective is to one day work within the performing arts industry while also helping make the industry more disabled people-friendly and an easier place to work for other disabled musicians.”

Leo credits the Alton staff with pushing him to help make his dream come true:

“Importantly, I realise that this wouldn’t have been possible without HSDC Alton’s support and encouragement over the last four years. I have benefitted greatly from the staff and tutors’ valuable help and advice enabling me to push my boundaries further than expected. HSDC Alton has given me the confidence to continue my studies in my chosen subject and passion: music.”

HSDC Alton Vocational and Foundation Learning and Learning Support Manager Lizzy Ryan is excited for Leo:

“Congratulations to Leo for this great achievement. He really pushed himself and it has resulted in a great achievement. We look forward to having him visit us as a former student in a few years and help inspire other students to excel.”
