Car mechanics of the future can gain firsthand experience of electric and hybrid cars thanks to new kit and training at HSDC South Downs.

Two new cars have been added to the workshop at the South Downs Campus, one hybrid and one fully electric, so all students on Motor Vehicle Systems courses can get to grips with fixing modern cars.

New vehicles powered solely by fossil fuels are being banned from 2030, with all cars to be zero emissions from 2035, so learning how to work with these new systems is essential for everyone training in this field.

From 2023, HSDC South Downs will be offering a T Level in Maintenance, Installation, and Repair: Light and Electric Vehicles, and students on all motor vehicle courses will have the opportunity to train using the Toyota Yaris hybrid and Nissan Leaf electric cars in the workshop.

Garry Adams, Programme Lead for Engineering and Automotive, said:

“All the technicians and students we’re putting through the system now have to be fully able to work with electric vehicles. Unless you have got a Level 2 or above in electric, you won’t be able to touch them.

“If we can upskill our students as part of the course, they can go in with the qualifications straight away.”

All of the lecturers in this faculty took part in a three-day training course to make sure they are qualified to deliver the curriculum and train students to maintain electric vehicles.

Garry added:

“It’s really exciting, it’s a massive step for us. I think it’s a good step but I will miss engine noises, I’m quite a petrol head!

“It’s exciting, forcing us to upskill and change our mindset and all the lecturers have taken it on board.”
