Several ambitious students were recently recognised for successfully completing the Oxford University Society Mentoring Programme.
During the final term of the academic year, a number of outstanding students from both HSDC Havant and Alton College came together with their mentors at HSDC’s Havant Campus to celebrate their hard work and determination.
HSDC works in partnership with the Oxford University Society to offer a fantastic mentoring programme to HSDC students who are looking to apply to Oxford, or a competitive university.
Therefore, mentoring is there to help students feel more prepared for higher education, equipping them with the necessary information, advice, guidance and tools to support their progression into university in their chosen field of study.
This is a very exciting opportunity for students to learn more about progressing onto, and studying a competitive course at University from those who have experience, develop new and existing skills and gain real-life insights into careers they might want to pursue.
The mentors have a wealth of experience in the world of education and employment, including teaching, Police and Crime for the Mayor of London, Tax Management, IT Specialists, ex-military and now a lecturer for a local University and Oncologists. In addition, some mentors are also Oxford Alumni.
Alongside their mentors, Principal and CEO of HSDC, Mike Gaston and Assistant Principal: Havant Academic Curriculum, Pete Budd were also in attendance to recognise the students’ efforts.
During the celebration, students were awarded with a certificate of achievement to congratulate them on their hard work and resilience.
Jodie Meakin, SUN Progression Mentor said:
“We are extremely proud of all students who have completed the programme and we are very grateful to our ten mentors who have kindly given up their time to offer their support, guidance and expert knowledge to help our students plan for their next steps onto University. As a result, four of our OUS students are looking to apply to Oxford.
The feedback from both students and mentors this year has been overwhelmingly positive with all students and mentors wanting a follow-up session in September and this year’s students happy to support with next year’s launch event.
I am delighted with the success of the OUS programme this year and hope we can continue this success next year”.
