A dedicated and hardworking student has impressed both employers and lecturers whilst excelling in his placement at a local leisure centre.
Student Felix Barrow, who studies at HSDC South Downs joined the Supported Internship Scheme in September 2023 with the aim of developing his skillset and expanding his knowledge which in turn will help him secure a job in the future.
The scheme, which provides personalised study programmes based primarily with an employer, enables young individuals with additional needs or disabilities to achieve sustainable paid employment whilst learning and developing a range of important skills needed for the workplace.
As part of the Supported Internship Scheme, Felix works at Horizon Leisure Centre twice a week, alternating between two locations whilst also attending college to develop his employability skills alongside studying English and Mathematics. By combining both elements, Felix should be ready for employment once he finishes the programme.
During the internship, Felix has been working closely with Joshua Cantillon, a gym instructor who has worked at Horizon for over four years. Joshua said:
“During the time Felix has been coming to Horizon he’s become a really big part of our community. He always comes in with great energy and is always happy to help our members and get stuck in with their workout.
Felix has been brilliant in helping to teach the HIITS class that we do and the members love it when he’s in as he’s always on hand to help, and brings a lot of enthusiasm to push them to work their hardest.”
Alongside Joshua, Felix has also been supported in his placement by his job coach Chrissie, who is also on hand to provide support whilst regularly speaking with the Horizon team.
SEND Employability Coordinator and Supported Internships Tutor Helen Robinson, who works with Chrissie added:
“Felix was supported in his placement by his job coach Chrissie who kept an eye on his progress, carried out reviews and liaised with staff from Horizon.
Felix also attended college around his cycling commitments to develop his employability skills such as interview techniques, customer service, personal presentation and teamwork.”
