Former HSDC Digital Games Design student Curtis Ramsay entered World Skills UK’s 3D Digital Game Art competition in April and since then has been extremely successful. The competition’s purpose is to emulate the role of a digital artist within the gaming industry, and provided Curtis with an incredible opportunity to enrich his studies with a chance to really shine at a national level.
For the first stage of the competition, Curtis had to create a digital 3D model of a hot air balloon designed for an elephant mouse. After passing this, he advanced to the semi-finals which saw him design a vehicle featuring organic elements, all within the short timeframe of six hours! His vehicle design was amazing, and he was able to advance to the finals.
Out of a pool of over 400 contestants, Curtis became one of the top 8 in the country, travelling to Manchester for the National Final at Oldham College last month. He was given three days to design and build a cuckoo clock, complete with an emerging creature. Whilst he didn’t claim the top prize, Curtis performed exceptionally well, and thoroughly enjoyed the competition.
Curtis’ lecturer Calum Teeling accompanied him to Manchester, saying:
“Curtis did incredibly well and I was really impressed with his commitment, his 3D modelling skills and with what he produced for the competition brief, he should be really proud of how well he did.”
As one of the top eight 3D designers in the country, Curtis was invited to the prestigious award ceremony, hosted at the Bridgewater Hall by Big Brother’s Will Best. Everyone at HSDC is incredibly proud of Curtis for his fantastic achievement, and are excited to see where it takes him in the future.
