Anyone For Tennis? HSDC Students Visit Wimbledon

December 12, 2024

Alton's Sports students pose for a photo at Wimbledon Tennis Centre.

Recently, a group of first and second year students on Alton’s Extended Diploma in Sports course had the opportunity to visit Wimbledon Tennis Centre in South-West London. As the host of the most iconic tennis tournament in the world, it was a great opportunity for the Sports students to learn more about Wimbledon from a unique perspective.

The trip began with an engaging seminar about Wimbledon as a business, and the importance of its brand around the world. Wimbledon’s brand is perhaps one of the most unique and recognisable in the sporting industry, and it was fantastic to see the students learn more about the role it plays.

Following the seminar, the students got a chance to look around the museum at the tennis centre. This was both interactive and interesting for the group as there were a host of things to see and do. After lunch, the students were taken on a guided tour of Wimbledon itself, and were shown some of the most iconic areas including No.1  Court, ‘Henman Hill’, and of course, Centre Court.

Speaking about the trip, Sports Teacher Dean Gillatt said:

“This was the first Wimbledon trip organised for our Sports students at Alton and one we will do again. Our students learnt about the business model behind Wimbledon which will help them in their upcoming Business in Sport module, they also got the chance to see the iconic Grand Slam venue up close. The students had a fantastic time and were great ambassadors for Alton College. The trip will certainly have enriched their knowledge, but they also witnessed the amount of different career opportunities that exist at Wimbledon and within the sports industry in general, which will help them plan their next steps after College.”
