HSDC is proud to offer the Extended Diploma in Public & Defence Services (PDS) course, as it is an excellent way for students to develop the professional skills needed for a career in public service. The course offers a unique variety of teaching and learning methods, including a fantastic blend of practical and theoretical approaches.

As part of their Conflict Management module, a group of 13 PDS students at Alton College recently took part in a practical course taught by A.C.T. Self Defence, focusing on lawful fighting. This course will then play a major role in preparing the students for their upcoming assessment.
A.C.T. Self Defence is an organisation that often works alongside uniformed services such as the police, ensuring that Alton students receive the highest level of practical training from industry professionals.
Using crash mats and pads, the students were taught about the distinction between offensive and defensive fighting and the importance of communication. The flaws of using punches were also discussed, and the students learnt how to adopt a secure ‘Ready’ stance, sparring with one another using the techniques taught to them by A.C.T.

Teaching the PDS students the importance of lawful fighting is crucial in helping them succeed on their course, as it has major implications for the public perception of policing. More importantly, knowing how to engage in conflict lawfully is vital in protecting the welfare of those involved in the fight.
Besides helping them with the completion of their course assessments, the training session also acted as a great team building exercise that was enjoyed by all.
