To celebrate HSDC’s Inclusion Week, students on Havant Campus hosted their own International Day on Tuesday 28 January. HSDC enshrines diversity and inclusion within its values, making Havant’s International Day a memorable and enjoyable experience for all. HSDC hosts learners from five different continents, making it a true celebration of the diversity at the College.

The day was centred around a fantastic event in the Sports Hall which saw students represent their heritage by sharing food and facts from their countries with their peers. There were 15 stands from different countries, including Italy, Germany, Slovakia, Brazil and Argentina, all of which were serving some absolutely delicious sweet treats. For coffee connoisseurs, there was also a chance to purchase some authentic Colombian coffee!

Students were treated to a 20 minute Samba dance lesson!

Students were then put to the test about how much they had learned, facing a fun trivia activity about the represented countries. Correct answers rewarded with golden coins that could be exchanged for prizes such as magnets, bottle openers and jumpers! A photo booth was open, allowing students to express themselves with international props and traditional clothing.

There were a number of other activities to get people involved, including a lively 20-minute Samba session. As well as this, a map of the world was put up in Havant’s reception area, allowing students to pin where they came from and share this with their friends.

International Manager, Angelica Cruz, who helped to organise the event, said:

“International Day was an absolute vibe! It was the perfect chance to celebrate diversity and unity with all the different nationalities in our College. The photobooth was the place to capture unforgettable memories, and the samba lessons? Pure energy! It was amazing seeing so many people wearing their traditional outfits, and even the staff got into the spirit. Can’t wait for the next one!”

Julio Carillo, Equity and Diversity Lead, was very pleased with how the day went, saying:

“International Day is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate our diverse international backgrounds and take pride in the rich cultural diversity of both students and staff. This event brings people together by embracing our differences – something that is increasingly important in today’s world.”
