Colleges Week 2025: HSDC Leading The Way For Green Skills Development

March 4, 2025

It’s Day Two of Colleges Week 2025! Today is all about highlighting the fundamental role that HSDC has played in building a brighter future for its learners by committing to the government’s mission to become a green energy superpower.

Environmental sustainability is enshrined in everything HSDC does, from new buildings to upskilling its students. The College is working towards a 2040 Net Zero target and aims to reduce its carbon footprint in all activities to achieve this.

One of the biggest ways in which HSDC is committed to this improvement in its environmental performance is in the construction of the brand-new teaching building on Havant Campus. This building is due to open in Spring 2025, with the construction using renewable and natural materials, aligning itself with HSDC’s sustainability objectives. Once constructed, the building will also seek to maximise energy efficiency.

However, it’s not just the College’s commitment to sustainability that makes it a green superpower, but in the very education of its learners.

Over the past few years, electric vehicles have been introduced to the automotive workshops at both Alton College and HSDC South Downs. Motor vehicles that run solely on fossil fuels will not be sold from 2030 onwards, meaning that the introduction of EVs to HSDC is critical to ensure that students are prepared for the environmental demands of the modern car industry.

Sufficient high-quality training in the maintenance of EVs is an increasingly valuable skill that employers will continue to look for in the future. HSDC is committed to providing students with these skills, not only so that they can enjoy a successful career, but so that the planet can be protected for generations to come.
