September 18, 2025

A student at Alton College has recently completed an incredible work experience placement with a prominent London-based paper artist.

Charlie McDonald, who has recently completed the Foundation Art & Design Diploma at Alton, spent two weeks working with Nathan Ward at his London studio. This placement saw Charlie assisting on several high-profile projects, including intricate installations and large-scale paper sculptures, helping to transform shop windows and public spaces.

The work experience placement gave Charlie a valuable insight into the creative industries.

It was a truly hands-on experience for Charlie, going far beyond the confines of a typical internship and providing him with a direct insight into the commercial side of art and design. Working with a professional artist like Nathan taught Charlie about deadlines, client communication and the precision needed for large-scale production.

Many students focus on digital or fine art, making Charlie’s paper art placement  a really unique experience for him. This medium is gaining popularity for its tactile and sustainable qualities, and provides the artist with a unique skillset in a competitive industry where originality and professionalism are key.

Nathan Ward’s art is often displayed in shop windows.

Nathan, who himself is a former student at Alton College, was full of praise for Charlie’s time on the placement, saying:

“Charlie was excellent throughout his time in the studio, he’s made Alton College proud by working on a variety of projects with me for a variety of clients including Google, Metier and the Independent Paper Show!”

This experience has truly enriched Charlie’s portfolio and shaped his understanding of different creative industries. Not only were his artistic skills developed, but he was also able to appreciate the value of professionalism and collaboration, assets that are crucial to any successful career.

As he prepares to begin a degree in Design for Theatre and Screen at the University for the Creative Arts, Charlie’s work experience stands out as a powerful example of how the Foundation Art & Design Diploma at Alton College can provide students with the skills necessary for a successful and meaningful career in the creative industries.
