HSDC has once again demonstrated its strong commitment to fostering a warm, welcoming and inclusive environment at the College as all three campuses recently came together to celebrate Inclusion Week. These celebrations were an inspiring celebration that highlighted HSDC’s unwavering commitment to nurturing ambitious, confident and high-achieving learners.
Students from across Havant, South Downs and Alton College came together to celebrate the diversity and inclusion that shapes campus life – an environment where our students’ ambition is strengthened by understanding, mutual respect and tolerance.

Havant’s International Day was once again a great success.
Building upon the success of last year’s event, Havant Campus once again hosted its hugely popular International Day. As in 2025, the event was a fantastic and joyful celebration of the diversity within the College community, with students filling the sports hall to share food, traditions and stories from their cultures. There was music, dancing, and even a free photobooth for the students to enjoy, ensuring that everyone was able to capture a special memory from the day.
There was also a rich cultural display in Havant’s reception, put together by students and staff. This display served as a crucial reminder that student excellence can truly thrive in diverse and collaborative places. Raquel Cabo-Acosta, Spanish course lead, spoke passionately about this display, saying:
“Havant Campus is proudly showcasing a vibrant display in reception that celebrates the rich cultural diversity of our college community. Featuring cultural symbols and traditional outfits from countries including Ukraine, Spain, Mexico and Bangladesh, the display highlights the fantastic cultural rainbow that makes our campus such a welcoming and inclusive place.”
Speaking about Havant’s International Day, Julio Carillo, Equity and Diversity Lead, said:
“At HSDC, we are proud to host a vibrant community made up of many nationalities and cultural backgrounds among both our students and staff. While differences can sometimes present challenges, they are far outweighed by the richness they bring enhancing learning, encouraging understanding, and creating a more engaging, inclusive and human educational experience for everyone at HSDC.”

International Food was served at the canteens across all three campuses.
Alton College’s Student Union helped to organise their campus’ event, which aimed to build upon the theme of aspirational learning by highlighting the variety of cultures that make up Alton. In particular, the event showcased Zimbabwe, South Africa, Ukraine, Russia and Italy, though other cultures were welcome to join in the celebration throughout the event. Different stands provided information about these cultures, whilst flashcards were provided for students to learn the basics of each language. Each stand helped students deepen their understanding of the world, engage critically with complex issues and develop the confidence needed to excel academically and personally.
At Alton’s event, there was also an ‘Ice Your Flag On A Cookie’ stand, where students put their artistic culinary skills to the test in a creative and tasty spin on inclusion.
South Downs Campus took a creative approach to Inclusion Week by hosting a ‘Wear Your Culture Day’, culminating in a vibrant fashion show where students proudly showcased traditional clothing. As well as this, students were able to attend language exchange sessions and workshops aimed at understanding microagressions to promote respectful communication.
South Downs also hosted an Inclusive Sports session, introducing students to boccia and many more accessible sports, whilst screenings of documentaries that tackled racism, homophobia and ableism were also available to watch throughout the week. The Inclusive Sports session in particular is a testament to HSDC’s commitment to an outstanding and accessible education, where every student feels safe and comfortable to thrive.

The Cultural Fashion Show at South Downs was a great chance to celebrate diversity.
It was incredibly inspiring to see students from across all three campuses come together in a celebration of HSDC’s diversity. The College works hard to foster a welcoming environment of acceptance and empathy, and these student-led events are a real testament to this.
Speaking about the importance of Inclusive Events like this, Julio Carillo added:
“This was a celebration of what makes us different and a reminder of the importance of living, learning and growing together, a message that feels more relevant now than ever before!”
Across all three campuses, HSDC’s Inclusion Week reaffirmed HSDC’s belief that ambitious learners flourish in environments where they feel safe, respected and empowered. By celebrating diversity and promoting mutual respect, the College continues to provide a dynamic, ambitious environment where learners are empowered to become their best selves, both inside and beyond the classroom.
