Apprenticeships in 2026: Resilience, Talent, and Skills

By Chris Richards, Manager for Work-Based Learning at HSDC

As we celebrate the start of National Apprenticeship Week 2026, I’m once again reminded why Apprenticeships matter more than ever, not just for learners, but for businesses, communities and the wider economy. In my role at HSDC, I’m lucky enough to spend my days speaking with employers across sectors, and the same themes come up repeatedly: resilience, talent, and the urgent need to close skills gaps in a rapidly evolving world.

If the last few years have taught us anything, it’s that resilience is not a luxury – it’s a necessity for success in both education and the workplace. Businesses need people who can adapt, grow and bring fresh perspectives to meet new challenges, and Apprenticeships are one of the most effective ways to build this resilience into the core of the workforce.

Our Apprenticeships at HSDC give learners the genuine opportunity to grow their confidence and capabilities, whilst employers benefit from enthusiastic and well-trained teams ready to contribute from day one. It’s a proven model in which everyone wins.

Whether in digital technologies, engineering, health, business services or creative industries, skills gaps continue to widen at a pace that’s difficult for many organisations to keep up with. This is where HSDC’s Apprenticeships come into their own.

Our programmes are shaped directly by employer input, meaning that businesses can tell us what skills they need, what challenges they’re facing, and where the gaps lie. HSDC then works to build training around that, most recently seen in the launch of our highly successful Funeral Care Apprenticeship, which has seen a 100% Distinction rate in its first year!

Apprenticeships can also upskill existing staff, giving them opportunities to learn, progress and share their knowledge. I’ve seen first-hand how industry placements give experienced employees the chance to mentor the next generation. It brings a renewed sense of purpose and knowledge to longstanding team members, whilst ensuring that vital workplace wisdom doesn’t disappear when people move roles or retire. Ultimately, HSDC wants to give young people, experienced staff, and business leaders the choice to upskill, explore new avenues, and invest in themselves.

At HSDC, we see ourselves not just as a training provider but as a partner in business growth. Apprenticeships only work when they reflect the genuine needs of a business, and that’s a responsibility that we take seriously.

As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, it’s a perfect moment to recognise the incredible value that Apprenticeships bring to our region. They are an investment in people, potential and long-term business success. And at HSDC, we’re proud to champion real learning for real business.
