Tailored A Level Excellence for Alton College Student

Alton College student Atticus Kerr is setting his sights on a future in international science and forensics – an ambition he credits to the opportunities, independence and expert teaching he continues to experience during his A Level studies. His journey reflects Alton College and HSDC’s shared commitment to raising aspirations and supporting all learners to progress confidently into their future careers.

When Atticus joined Alton College in September 2024, he arrived from a more traditional and structured school environment, and was unsure how his passion for forensic science might grow into a future career. He enrolled to study A Level Chemistry, Psychology and Biology, as well as an A Level-equivalent Criminology qualification, quickly identifying how well these subjects linked together to support his long-term goals. 

“The freedom at HSDC has been one of the best parts of studying here,” Atticus said, “I’ve been able to manage my own time, use my study periods well, and develop my confidence and independence.”

These transferable skills are exactly what HSDC aims to instil in every learner at the College, as they serve as the foundation of competent and successful professionals both at university and in the workforce. As his confidence increased, Atticus worked closely with Alton College to push himself further academically, adding A Level Maths to his timetable in his second year, as well as preparing to complete a rare fast-track Physics course starting in September.

Atticus’ unique and bespoke timetable is just one example of how Alton College and HSDC work to ensure that student’s aspirations are at the forefront of college life. He has embraced the technical challenges of his courses, achieving a Silver award in the National Chemistry Olympiad, a prestigious national competition that recognises rising scientific talent.

Extracurricular activities have also played a part in making Atticus’ time at Alton a major success, as he embarked on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to India last Spring. This two-week trip was fully funded by the Turing Scheme, a government programme that aims to give students at HSDC the opportunity to enjoy hands-on global learning experiences, cultural exchange and the chance to visit iconic landmarks such as the Taj Mahal. 

“Working on the Turing Project was incredible,” he shared. “It opened my eyes to new perspectives. Studying Biology also made me consider other scientific paths like ecology and biodiversity, as well as my existing passion for forensics.”

The Turing Trip exemplifies HSDC’s mission to support outstanding student outcomes by giving all learners accessibility to real-world experiences that build confidence, knowledge and employability.

Atticus credits HSDC’s expert teaching and flexible study spaces with helping him thrive. He regularly uses the Learning Hub and its dedicated silent spaces, and particularly values how teachers balance academic challenge with understanding and encouragement. Atticus added: 

“All of my teachers at Alton are so supportive, and really push you to try your best. Even if you’re falling behind, they’ll help you with extra support in class that can really make a difference.”

The nurturing environment at Alton has strengthened more than just his academic skills. Atticus explains that through making new friends, managing his workload and navigating student life independently, his confidence in himself, and his belief in what he can achieve, has grown significantly.

With a renewed ambition that comes from studying at HSDC, Atticus is now preparing to apply for the highly competitive MEXT Scholarship in Japan, a fully funded programme that supports international students through a preparatory year before university. He hopes to specialise in a chemistry-based degree linked to advanced forensic science.

Japan’s demographic changes and strong demand for young scientists appeal to him, with this goal aligning exactly with the strong ambitions that HSDC instils in every student at the College. 

Atticus’ story demonstrates HSDC’s commitment to aspiration in action, helping young people to set higher goals, access opportunities beyond the classroom and develop the independence they need for future success. He is currently on track for straight As and A*s at College, and his advice for new students to succeed is simple:

“Don’t be afraid to talk to new people – teachers or students. Getting to know those around you makes life at college so much easier, and the welcoming environment at HSDC makes it so easy to make friends!”

As Atticus looks ahead to an international future of scientific success, his time at Alton College has already given him the skills, confidence and mindset to take the next step – proof of the powerful long-term impact of an aspirational, student-centred college environment.
