Students at HSDC Havant have demonstrated exceptional academic ability and commitment to excellence following their outstanding performance in the highly competitive UK Chemistry Olympiad, run by the Royal Society of Chemistry.
The UK Chemistry Olympiad is a nationally recognised competition designed primarily for second-year A Level Chemistry students. It challenges participants with a series of demanding, real-world chemistry problems that go well beyond standard A Level exam questions.
Unlike traditional assessments, the Olympiad requires students to apply their knowledge in unfamiliar contexts, testing their advanced analytical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as scientific reasoning.
Despite the competition’s level of difficulty, HSDC Havant students rose to the challenge, achieving an impressive set of results:
- 4 Silver Awards: placing these students in the top 34.2% nationally.
- 7 Bronze Awards: placing these students in the top 70.7% nationally
Notably, this year’s results reflect not only strong performance from second-year students but also remarkable success among first-year entrants,, who typically have not yet covered the full A Level syllabus required for the competition.
Among the highlights from these entrants was one first-year student who achieved a Silver award – an exceptional accomplishment and the highest mark ever achieved by a first-year at the College.
These achievements are a direct reflection of HSDC’s commitment to fostering academic excellence, encouraging students to engage with opportunities that extend beyond the curriculum.
David Brimecome, chemistry teacher at HSDC Havant, praised the accomplishments of this year’s cohort, saying:
“I am extremely proud of how well all of the students have done in the Olympiad this year! It’s the best set of results I have seen since joining the College!”
These strong results underpin the College’s broader reputation for high academic standards and student excellence, particularly within the STEM subjects. By supporting both experienced second-year learners and ambitious first-year students to compete at this level, HSDC continues to demonstrate its dedication to nurturing talent and promoting academic ambition across all year groups.
These outcomes not only celebrate individual student success, but highlight the strength of teaching, support and enrichment opportunities available at HSDC Havant.
