The future of the creative industries was brought vividly to life at Portsmouth Guildhall recently, as students from HSDC South Downs demonstrated outstanding talent and professionalism at Portsmouth Comic Con 2026, taking their learning far beyond the classroom and into a live professional environment.
In a high-profile collaboration with Portsmouth Guildhall, HSDC’s UAL L4 Creative Enterprise students worked alongside L3 Photography & Graphics learners to curate an ambitious exhibition in The Base. The showcase celebrated the excellence of HSDC’s students and featured a diverse range of industry-standard work inspired by Marvel, DC, anime and sci-fi, capturing the attention of thousands of convention attendees.
Whilst many attended Comic Con to see celebrity guests, nine entrepreneurial students from HSDC used the event as a launchpad for their careers. Setting up and running their own stalls, they sold original fan artwork directly to the public, generating over £500 across the weekend and gaining invaluable first-hand experience of the creative marketplace.
This immersive opportunity stands at the heart of HSDC’s commitment to real-world learning. Students were able to develop essential professional skills, including the management of commercial sales with industry-standard tools, engaging confidently with customers, and gaining immediate insight into audience preferences and trends within the creative sector.
Paul Parsons, Course Lead for Art & Design and Creative Enterprise at South Downs, described the experience as a defining moment in students’ development:
“At HSDC, we pride ourselves on creating opportunities where students can excel in real-world settings. The Creative Enterprise course transforms the classroom into a working studio – students build their own businesses, develop their ideas and can then showcase their work on a professional stage. Events like this allow them to prove their talent in a meaningful, public way.”
The College is incredibly proud of its strong partnership with the Guildhall, and would like to thank Curt Hill, Events Manager, for his ongoing support to allow students to thrive. Paul Parsons said:
“Our ongoing collaboration with Curt and his team has been instrumental in supporting our students. They are so passionate about supporting emerging talent and providing our students with a genuine pathway into the creative industries.”
This weekend marked yet another successful chapter in the growing partnership between HSDC and Portsmouth Comic Con. For students, the experience was both affirming and inspiring, as it offered them the powerful realisation that their work is not only worthy of academic success, but valued by real audiences in the professional world.
Jessie Raven is a first year Photography & Graphics student at South Downs, and spoke with pride about showcasing her work at Comic Con:
“It really felt incredible to be in a new place filled with artists just as excited as I was to have this kind of opportunity.”

As plans begin forming for future events, HSDC continues to champion student excellence through meaningful, real-word opportunities, ensuring that learners are not only classroom-ready, but industry-ready, and well on their way to shaping the next generation of creative talent.
