English Literature students from HSDC Havant recently enjoyed a truly memorable enrichment experience, travelling to Stratford-upon-Avon for an immersive day of Shakespearean education led by the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC).
This visit formed part of HSDC’s prestigious status as a Lead Associate School with the RSC – a landmark partnership that places the College at the heart of one of the world’s most influential theatre organisations. This exclusive relationship enables HSDC students to access high-quality, authentic learning experiences that go far beyond the classroom, bringing set texts to life through direct engagement with industry professionals.
During the day, the students took part in a bespoke workshop on Othello, one of their core exam texts. This session was expertly delivered by an RSC Director with experience of working on the production of the play, giving students a rare insight into professional performance and interpretation.
Rather than just analysing the play on the page, students explored key scenes actively, experimenting with different movements, delivery and staging to uncover character motivation, subtext and romantic tension.
This approach helped students to deepen their understanding of Shakespeare’s language and themes whilst developing confidence, critical thinking and collaborative skills. Importantly, the workshop was also able to balance academic rigour with enjoyment, demonstrating that both studying and creativity can, and should, sit side by side.
Pete Budd, Assistant Principal for Havant, said:
“It was a real pleasure to take our English Literature students to Stratford! We have an excellent relationship with the RSC, and were delighted that our students could attend a bespoke workshop on one of our set texts, Othello.”
Following the workshop, students attended a matinee performance of Henry V at the RSC Theatre. For many, this was their first opportunity to watch a professional Shakespeare production in Stratford itself – an experience that added rich context to their studies and reinforced the timeless relevance of Shakespeare for all.
This visit exemplifies the true benefits of HSDC’s partnership with the RSC, reflecting a shared commitment to widening access to a high-quality arts education. As a Lead Associate School, HSDC plays an active role in championing Shakespeare across further education, ensuring that students from the South Coast can engage with world-class theatre in an inclusive and meaningful way.
