FILM FESTIVAL SHOWCASES OUTSTANDING CREATIVE TALENT OF HSDC’S YOUNG FILMMAKERS

July 6, 2026

The aspiring filmmakers of HSDC South Downs recently took centre stage as they celebrated the premiere of their Final Major Projects at ‘Final Cut’, a student-led film festival that demonstrated the creativity, professionalism and storytelling talent emerging from the College.

Held at the iconic Eldon Building at the University of Portsmouth, the event was conceived, organised and run by students on South Downs’ L3 Diploma in Film and TV Production. More than 100 guests attended the screenings, including friends, family, staff and fellow students, to watch an impressive programme of original films spanning a range of genres and styles.

The screening showcased everything, from striking music videos inspired by artists including Radiohead and Florence & The Machine, to thought-provoking documentaries exploring the impact of AI, alongside powerful dramas that captivated audiences and demonstrated the breadth of talent within the cohort.

A particular highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Best Film Award, voted on by students. This prestigious accolade went to ‘Penance’, an emotionally charged drama praised for its compelling narrative, strong performances and cinematography.

This award-winning production was created by students Maya Soares, Ruben Dharmi, Sophie Parnell and Bella Wright, all of whom were recognised by their peers for their efforts.

The festival also celebrated the performances of actors within the films, all of whom were also students from HSDC South Downs! The performances of these students, all of whom had honed their craft on the Acting for Stage and Screen course, highlighted the strong partnerships that underpin the creative courses at South Downs.
