From Havant Sixth Form College to Medicine: Charlie’s Success Story

October 27, 2026

Former Havant Sixth Form College student Charlie Sanger is approaching the end of her five-year degree at the University of Birmingham, as she continues to pursue her ambition of becoming a doctor.
After achieving AAA in A Level Psychology, Chemistry and Biology during her time at Havant, Charlie secured a place at her first-choice university, where she is now in her fifth year, developing the knowledge and skills needed for a career in medicine.

With ambitions of working in emergency medicine, Charlie reflected on her journey so far and how her experiences at Havant Sixth Form College helped prepare her for university.

For Charlie, who has dreamed of becoming a doctor since Year 9, the appeal of medicine lies in its combination of scientific knowledge, problem-solving and the opportunity to make a difference to people’s lives.

“I love the mental side of medicine and how it combines human biology with decision-making and problem-solving. I enjoy having to think things through and work out solutions,” she explained.

Reflecting on her time at Havant Sixth Form College, Charlie credits the support and teaching she received with helping her prepare for the challenges of university.

In particular, she highlighted how studying A Level Psychology provided a valuable foundation for her medical degree, giving her knowledge that proved particularly beneficial during her first year.

“Psychology was actually one of the subjects that prepared me the most for medicine. I found it really helped me in my first year!” she said.

Charlie also benefited from the College’s dedicated tutor group for aspiring medics and dentists, which supported students hoping to progress into these competitive fields.

However, it was the encouragement and approachability of her teachers that stood out most when reflecting on her experience.

“The teachers were fantastic. They were so supportive and approachable, and it felt like they were your friends as well as your teachers. They genuinely cared about everyone and always treated students equally.”

Looking ahead, Charlie hopes to pursue a career in emergency medicine, drawn to the fast-paced environments and the variety of challenges it presents.

“I’ve always had a feeling that I’ll end up working in an emergency department. I love the fast pace and the fact that you’re constantly seeing something different and meeting different people.”

For current students hoping to follow a similar path, Charlie encourages them to remain determined, even if their grades aren’t initially where they’d want them to be.

“Don’t be disheartened if you’re not getting the grades you want straight away. Your grades can always improve, and if you keep working hard, getting those A’s is really possible.”

She also emphasises the importance of preparing thoroughly for university interviews, particularly the Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs) commonly used for medicine applications.

As Charlie approaches the end of her medical degree, her journey highlights how hard work, determination and the right support can help students achieve their ambitions.

We wish Charlie every success as she takes the next steps towards her dream career in medicine.
