A Level Fashion and Textiles students from Havant Sixth Form College recently had the opportunity to explore an extraordinary international embroidery project, discovering how textiles can bring people together and tell powerful stories.
The students visited Bedales School to see The Red Dress, an award-winning collaborative embroidery project that celebrates creativity, culture and self-expression through textile art.
Conceived by British artist Kristie Macleod, the project took 14 years to complete, travelling across the globe between 2009 and 2023. Made from 87 panels of burgundy silk, the dress features intricate embroidery contributed by 380 artists from 51 countries.
The project has earned a place in the Guinness World Records for the largest collaborative embroidery project in the world, highlighting the remarkable scale of the international collaboration.
Beyond its impressive craftsmanship, The Red Dress provides a platform for individuals, particularly women from vulnerable or disadvantaged communities, to share through personal experiences through embroidery, each making their own contribution.

For Havant Sixth Form’s Fashion and Textile students, the visit offered an opportunity to explore the relationship between textiles, storytelling and cultural identity, while gaining inspiration from a diverse range of embroidery styles and techniques.
The experience also complemented their A Level studies, which encourages students to develop their creativity through experimentation, independent research and practical exploration.
Experiences such as this provide valuable opportunities for students to discover new approaches to textile design, broaden their creative perspectives and explore the possibilities of fashion and textiles beyond the classroom.
