Ordering your bus/train pass (without financial support)

(For those households that do NOT receive an income-based benefit)

Havant & South Downs campuses

Bus Passes:
All full time students at Havant and South Downs campuses are eligible to purchase an online discounted student bus pass via the First Bus app or Stagecoach app/website (the bus company you use will depend on what area you are living in and which campus you are studying at).

Please click here to see our useful South Downs Campus bus pass guide

Please click here to see our useful Havant Campus bus pass guide

The student bus pass will allow you to travel for a cheaper cost (compared to standard priced fares). Bus passes can be used in the evenings and weekends in the zone specified.

Additional financial help (a partial refund) towards bus passes may be available to full time students (not including Higher Education courses) who are aged 16-19 and live in certain postcode areas and are still enrolled on their course of study at the beginning of the second term. This is called a ‘Travel Subsidy’; if you are eligible for this, the College will contact you during the second term.

Train Passes:
Full time students at Havant and South Downs campuses who wish to travel by train may apply for a termly rail pass. The train pass will be at a discounted price (compared to standard priced fares). A further reduction to the cost will be made by the College towards all rail passes to hopefully make the pass more affordable.

Please click here to view Train Pass Prices for Havant and South Downs campuses.

The Department of Transport has also launched a railcard for 16 to 17-year-olds, which gives students 50% off train fares. For more information on this scheme, please see further below on this page.

You can purchase a termly train pass via the College’s online payment system, WisePay and enter your login details – continuing students may use their existing login details.

If you do not know your details, please contact Finance on 023 9279 7991 (option 1). Once you have entered your details, click on Travel Payments and select the Train Pass options for Havant or South Downs.

  • Click on ‘view details’ and select the train station you are travelling to and from. The price for this rail pass will be displayed – then click on purchase. Once you have paid, the College will be notified, and we can then start to process your order.
  • If you pay for a train pass by mid-August, we guarantee that your train pass will be ready for collection at the start of term. We will still process applications after this date but will not be able to guarantee when the pass will be ready for collection, especially during the end of August and throughout September when we are significantly busy. You are liable to pay your own travel costs until your train pass arrives.

You can collect your pass from the Student Travel & Support Office. If you are a first-year student, please remember to bring a passport-style photo with you as this is needed for your SWR train photocard. Continuing students can use their existing photocard.

STAGECOACH

Stagecoach bus passes will be available to download from the middle of July 2024 (but cannot be used until 1st September 2024):

Download the Stagecoach app onto the student’s phone (for mobile phone bus passes) or physical tickets may still be available via the Stagecoach website. You will need to create an account or login if you already have an account. Select ‘Buy Tickets’ and then choose ‘Student’ tickets. Make sure your area is set as ‘Portsmouth and Havant’.

Tickets for all students will be displayed. Please make sure you select the correct ticket for the campus you are studying at and the correct ticket for where you live. If you do not select the correct ticket, you may not be able to travel to College. See below for examples to help you.

Please note, that once the ticket is in the basket, Stagecoach may ask you for a discount code – you do NOT need to enter a discount code as the pass is already at a reduced cost for students.

Once you have purchased the ticket, you will need to enter your student details before you can activate the pass. Please make sure you select the correct campus of study so the college can contact you about any ‘Travel Subsidy’ payment you will be due.

Examples

Havant Area Student Ticket (South Downs Campus or Havant Campus): If you live in Havant, Bedhampton, West Leigh and Leigh Park you may select the Havant Student Ticket. The Havant Student ticket can be used in all of Havant (including Havant Campus) and as far as South Downs Campus (no further than this).

Waterlooville Area Student Ticket (Valid to South Downs Campus only): If you live in Waterlooville and are studying at South Downs Campus, you may select the Waterlooville ticket – this ticket can be used in all of Waterlooville (including Hambledon, Denmead, Horndean and Clanfield) and as far as Havant Asda (no further than this and you cannot travel to Havant Campus on this ticket).

For students living in Waterlooville and studying at Havant Campus: If you live in Waterlooville and are studying at Havant Campus you cannot select the Waterlooville Ticket as this ticket will not allow you to travel to Havant Campus (the furthest you can travel is to Havant Asda). This is because Stagecoach class ‘Waterlooville’ and ‘Havant’ as two different bus zones, therefore the Waterlooville ticket can only be used Waterlooville. To arrive at Havant Campus, you must select the South Hants Student Ticket – see below.

South Hants Area Student Ticket (South Downs Campus or Havant Campus): If you live in Portsmouth, Southsea, Hayling Island, Waterlooville, Havant and before Emsworth Square, you may select the South Hants Student Ticket. This ticket can be used in all the above areas. This ticket will allow you to travel to both South Downs Campus and Havant Campus.

This ticket can be used in all of Hampshire, Surrey, West Sussex, Wiltshire, West Berkshire and Brighton. This ticket will allow you to travel to both South Downs Campus and Havant Campus.

The College are aware that Stagecoach have significantly increased the price of some of their tickets. In light of this, HSDC will try to help absorb some of the cost for any Havant Campus or South Downs Campus students affected by the increase in prices. HSDC will now give a ‘Travel Subsidy’ payment of £40 to those students who purchase a Stagecoach Havant or Waterlooville area ticket, £140 to those students who need to purchase a South Hants ticket to college and £160 to those students who must purchase a Gold ticket to travel to college.

To qualify for this payment, the student must still be enrolled on their full time course (excluding Higher Education courses) in their second term. If you decide to order a Stagecoach pass (termly or annual), please ensure you select either the Havant or South Downs Campus when choosing which college/campus you are studying at on the Stagecoach app/website, otherwise your details may not come through to us. The College and Stagecoach will contact eligible students nearer the time. Please look out for this email near December/January.

First Bus has an app that allows you to buy and load bus tickets to your mobile phone. This means that you cannot lose your pass and you will no longer have to pay for replacements. If you lose or change your phone, just download the App to the new phone, log in to your account and simply press ‘refresh’ and your ticket is reloaded. An internet connection is not required when you are using the ticket, a data connection is only needed for the initial purchase.

All bus passes for HSDC can be downloaded on the First Bus app. It is important that you register for the mobile pass in the student’s name and the student’s college email address – please do not use a personal email address, otherwise your First Bus mTicket may not work. Your college email address is displayed within the initial Travel and Support email we sent in July.

The Department of Transport has launched a new Railcard which will benefit 16 and 17-year olds. This Railcard, which costs £30 to buy, offers 50% discount on rail travel.

HSDC understands that some rail passes will still be cheaper if purchased through the College but we would advise those students (aged between 16-17) and their parent/carers to investigate the 16-17 Railcard scheme before purchasing a college train pass.

For further information on the 16-17 Railcard, please go to the 16-17 Railcard website.
