Keep playing the sports you enjoy
Whether you’re playing for fun and fitness, or aiming to compete at the highest level, we offer you a wide range of high-quality sporting opportunities through our sports teams. Importantly, you don’t have to be studying a sports-related course to take part in our sporting provision. Team trials are held before you start with us, so you’ll be ready to start training and playing as soon as you enrol.
To get involved in playing the sports you love, simply during enrolment simply complete a team sports form telling us what sport you want to be involved in. Additionally, if you compete in another sport there is opportunity to take part in regional and potentially national competitions.
During the summer term we offer students the chance to compete in the Hampshire competitions. We were county runners up in 2013. In 2016/17 we had over 30 athletes attending these events and a number of our athletes competed at the Hampshire Schools Athletics Championships, including one who is competing internationally.
Currently we compete in the Hampshire Colleges League and British Colleges Cup games and fixtures. What’s more, we’ve just been awarded Badminton England Premier College status. We have also had teams and individuals qualify for the National Finals, and in 2014/15 we won the National Plate Finals.
Our men’s and women’s basketball teams play in the Hampshire League. In 2012/13 season our women’s team won the British Colleges Plate Trophy.
During the summer term we offer students the chance to compete in the Hampshire competitions, and have provided year-round training since 2013. As a result, our cricketers have become the strongest college team in our local area. Our players have also represented Hampshire Women’s and Hampshire Youth Academy.
In 2016/17 our Indoor Cricket team won the bronze medal at the AoC National Championships at Trent Bridge.
We currently have six teams, five of which play in the country’s largest and most established College league. With a strong heritage in college football, we will look to continue to build on our success. Our Academy squad compete in the National League under 19 Alliance. Recognised as the strongest standard of youth football outside of the professional game, providing a great platform for a young player. All squads have regular training sessions with FA qualified coaches.
We have a strong record in hockey. Our men’s team were British Colleges Cup finalists in 2012 and runners-up in the National Tertiary Cup in 2011. Meanwhile our mixed team made the national finals. In 2015/16 we had two players selected for national trials.
Netball is one of our fastest-growing sports both at HSDC and nationally. We now have two teams playing in the Hampshire League and local tournaments and will be entering a team for the National Colleges Tournament.
Our rugby team plays in the Hampshire Colleges League and other competitive cups and tournaments throughout the year. In 2015/16 our players won the Hampshire President’s 7s, the Hampshire College’s 7s, and were unbeaten in the Hampshire College’s League. We work closely with the RFU to offer coaching and officiating courses and have formal links with Havant RFC.
Our provision for women’s rugby is also growing and we have representatives for Hampshire U18s. We also offer beach rugby 7’s where we compete each year in the National Beach Touch Rubgy.
We have entered individuals into the Hampshire Schools Swimming Championships, In 2016/17 a number of these then moved on to represent the region at the National Championships in Liverpool.
Regular table tennis training sessions are scheduled throughout the week and, as a result, we’ve developed a strong squad. In 2013/15 our players were runners up in the South East regional competition.
We have entered individuals into the British Colleges competitions, and in 2014/15 won the gold medal in the men’s competition.
We were ranked sixth in the country in the British Colleges competitions in 2014, and were the South East of England Champions in 2013/14. In 2014/15 our women’s team finished third in the region. We also have links with local clubs.
